Are You Comfortable With Meeting New People
In the beginning for almost any business, you will have to promote your business and yourself. This means: going up to, calling, and knocking on the door of total strangers. While at networking events you will meet and greet a variety of new people. Usually after the fifth hand-shake the next few greetings will feel second nature to you.
On The Other Hand, Do You Like Working Alone
Owning a small business or being a self contractor can mean hours and days at your drafting table, or home office desk. But for many people like myself the peace and quiet to be able to focus is a great plus when it comes to working for myself.
Working Long Hours And Weekends
When you operate a business long hours can come with the package. With many others just as myself a 5am – 10pm on a Saturday can, and often does happen especially if it involves travel, that is in addition to your recent full time work week. On those days I do give myself at least an occasional 1-1/2 break through out the day.
Handling Greater Responsibilities
The desire to work your own hours is something that almost all of us dream about, also the allure of making your own money, followed by being your own boss. But these three things require more than the average employee will ever encounter.
Not only do you have the responsibility of doing all or part of the daily duties, you also are responsible for: promotion, accounting, customer relations, taxes, employee/ vendor/ sub-contractor relations, administrative duties/ supervision, openings & closings – taking some of the work home during evenings & weekends…Shall I go on? These are the major things you can expect on a weekly basis while working for yourself.
What Business Is Right For You
Choose Carefully, Don’t Just Pick Something of Interest You are not limited to your present skills though. You can also locate a job in your desired field, work for a minimum of 6 months, and if you can gain knowledge in the management of that business you will be way ahead of the game.
